Weekly Roundup

The most entertaining stories we find during our research
by Josh Stone | published on Jul 15, 2011

---We cover executive shifts all of the time, so why leave out the fictional kind?: Hollywood veteran James Spader is joining NBC’s "The Office," as CEO of Sabre, the parent company of Dunder Mifflin.

There’s still no word on Regional Manager Michael Scott’s replacement, though DailyVista is continually looking into the matter. Link

---Space Exploration Technologies Corp., known as SpaceX, broke ground on a new launch site for its Falcon Heavy, which it claims will be the world’s most powerful rocket. Space tourism, here we come! Link

---New Mexico’s State Tourism Department has created a scavenger hunt for residents and tourists to find Billy the Kid’s hideout, complete with a Web site and mobile app. The first to present Billy the Kid with an arrest warrant will win $10,000!

What happens if they come across the missing aliens from Area 51 during their tour? Link

---As part of Vitaminwater’s “You’re Up” campaign, the brand has installed a 5-volt battery-powered USB port within a display ad in select bus shelters in NYC, Chicago, Los Angeles and Boston that lets users charge their USB-compatible mobile, gaming device or MP3 player.

Forget actually giving passengers a reason to talk to each other while they wait for the bus. Oh wait, that’s what Facebook is for. Link

---Awkward Family Photos, one of my favorite humor sites, is expanding its brand into board games. If spending time with your family wasn’t awkward enough, the game allows players to answer questions like “What do you think happened right after this photo was taken?” and “What celebrity would be a great addition to the photo?”

Sounds fun until mom gets nostalgic and breaks out her stash of home movies. Link

---World Series champs the San Fran Giants may have more to worry about than the future of injured catcher Buster Posey. The team initiated a contest earlier this season seeking a baby that was born of Giants-fans as close as possible to nine months after its Nov. 1 World Series win.

Hmm…so the team is basically asking, “Tell us about the night you had sex after the Giants won the Series.” Link

---Legendary punk club CBGB, which was forced to close in 2006, is now just a brand name up for sale to highest bidder. How corporate and un-punk! Link

---Georgia and Virginia, the two states with the most Civil War battlefields, are observing the war’s sesquicentennial starting this year and continuing through 2015, but they’re spending differs dramatically.

Virginia lawmakers have bankrolled a commission created to oversee the commemoration with $10 million through the fiscal year, while Georgia’s General Assembly, citing budget constraints, only gave its state’s Civil War Commission $10,000 for fiscal 2012.

I guess we know where the tourists are heading. Link
